September 10th, 2023

I woke up at the crack of dawn to Venus brightly shining just under the waning crescent moon. This was all framed in my bedroom window just after four thirty in the morning.

I read an article this morning how an amazing dialect of Spenglish is developing in South Florida. It’s a unique mix of Spanish and English that has been developing since 1959 when Cubans began their migration to the democracy of America.
Now my goal today is to find a study on Chicagonese. I’m sure there is an in-depth study on how English is battered on the southwestern coast of Lake Michigan.
The Chicago dialect must have changed through the years. The French were the first to settle around the mouth of the river. Then came the Germans, the Polish, the Irish, the Greeks, the Jews, the Hungarians, Croatians, Italians, Swedes, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans and Southern Blacks.
Mash all of these ethnics together and youse get da accent made famous by da great late Mayor Richard J. Daley.
You can find an old school Puerto Rican or Mexican in Chicago and they are “deaze” and “doze” Chicagoans. Same with third and fourth generation black families. The Northshore Wasps don’t speak much Chicagonese, but a blue collar Southsider is fluent.
The dialects of America are a work in progress. See what you can learn when you wake up early?
I think it’s time to crawl out of bed and make some Walter Payton coffee. Strong and black like the running back for the Chicago Bears between 1975 and 1987.
Big game today in Soldiers… started making chili yesterday for the greatest NFL rivalry. For rugby fans out there…. South Africa and Scotland take the pitch at 10:45 this morning followed at 2:00 this afternoon, Wales vs Fiji.
Sunrise is just before 6:30 this morning. In Chicago the sun is coming up closer to the Southside at this time of the year. If you live in Riverside the sun is shining straight across the river just east of the walking bridge.
So get up and get some 34 in your coffee pot, make your bed, watch the sunrise and put the smile on the sun…
