Courage and fear are considered opposites, but they are actually related.
Fear is conquered by courage. Bravery is created through terror.
When I was a kid I was scared of The Devil, Hippies and Lee Harvey Oswald.
My Faith grew stronger and the Devil doesn’t bother me anymore. Ronald Reagan came along and squashed hippies and commies. Jack Ruby rubbed out Oswald.
I still quiver when I smell patchouli oil…
When I was a little older I was scared of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Christ The King girls…
…until one of them dragged me onto a dance floor in 1980. “Babe” by Styx will always be our song.
As an adult all my fears center around my children.
Are they happy?
Are they healthy?
Are they learning how to make friends?
I fear that one of these mornings I’ll get a call from Laurie Dann or Marilyn Lemak.
Every other Sunday around 5:30pm it takes a lot of courage to leave the Shepkids west of Mannheim Road.
One of the silver linings having my parents in heaven is knowing that they are watching George, Fritz and Hazel when I can’t.
It’s going to be a windy warm and moist Wednesday.
Two weeks and the smell of grilled onions on a hot dog and the cheer of the crowd will fill the Bridgeport air.
