December 12th, 2024

Due to cold temperatures, The Morning Chalkboard will have limited service today.

I had an older colleague tell me last night that he’s going to spend more time in Arizona this winter.
I hope I never get to the point that I would give up on Chicagoland because of the weather.
I know where the sun is and what the angle of its shadows are for every day of the year. That sunrise and sunset time in the lower left hand corner isn’t just there for a courtesy for you.
It is there to let you know the length of your day, the length of your shadow and how precious time really is….
True, the Chicago Grid makes it easier to line up the sun. No offense to Arizona, I’ll give them respect because their football team once played home games at Comiskey Park….
… but what is the fun in the sun when it’s streaking across the desert sky?
I’ll stick to a town that has cold snaps and blizzards on occasion. Because I know the pizza guy has snow tires on his truck and the hot dog stand never closes for bitter weather.
I’ve sat in my car eating White Castles with the windows down and the spring breeze blowing through and I’ve sat there with the defrost on and the sack of sliders up on the dashboard keeping warm.
I’m always going to live an L ride away from the parish that I was baptized in.
Go to Arizona or Florida or Bermuda for the winter. I’ll stay here and keep dibs, wear long johns and sniff frozen nostrils while I scrape ice off of Betty the Green Blazer’s windshield.
In 165 days, the shadows will be shorter, the soft serve ice cream stands will be open and the White Sox will be 14 games back and in last place.
I’ll stick it out even though I’m going to be a little stiff this morning.
