“You’re just Going through the motions!!!”

Heard that many times as a kid…. From coaches, teachers, my parents!
I go through the motions at work and I get fired…. Go through the motions around my kids and they grow up pieces of shit…. Go through the motions In marriage and you end up…. Well…… happy in The DDD of Riverside!
Don’t be like me though…. Work hard everyday and keep faith in your marriage, go on dates, wear fun underwear and smiles!
Bear down Chicago Bears! Tits up Chicago White Sox!
If you’re carving pumpkins…. Coat the inside with Pam spray and cayenne…. It doesn’t kill the critters and it’s hilarious watching the squirrels with a face full of Cajun fire!

October 9th, 2021

October 9th and I still have the GoldBond on the top shelf! One of you guys went out and bought new sweaters for Fall and the rest of us are sweating balls and boobs!

I love the changing of the seasons on the onion field by the lake! I’m worried my favorite season will be lost between a humid rainstorm and a windy snowstorm!
I want a fire pit, a couple dear friends, a sweater, a bottle of bourbon, a cigar, a good soundtrack and a crisp autumn moon…. That’s all I’m asking for Mother F. Nature.
Cutting short….. I just heard my Princess from the other room, “Dad? May I have a glass of water and can you sing me “Moonriver” again?”
Gotta go….. enjoy your Saturday!

October 8th, 2021

When I was in 7th grade I had to rake the leaves in my Gramma’s yard. She had a small house in Broad Ripple, but it had huge trees in the front and back.

I did the back first, it was larger. I was losing daylight as I finished raking the front leaves into a huge pile.
I worked my ass off for two hours, blisters on the skin between my thumb and pointer finger. All that hard work and I decided to jump into my big pile of leaves.
The whole time I was outside working, Loretta was inside cooking dinner and occasionally looking out the window to see my progress.
At the moment I took my mighty and foolish leap into the pile of autumn…. My gramma quietly walked out on the front porch. Her “Grandmother sense” knew I was about to waste an afternoon’s work.
I laid in what was left of a pile of leaves strewn across the front lawn and saw my Gramma standing over me shaking her head in disgust.
In the darkness of an early November evening I finished my chore knowing I was going to get scolded….
After we said Grace I looked down at my plate and my Gramma said, “John Stephen…. It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it.”
Today’s quote!
Eight years earlier my Grampa raked those same leaves on an autumn afternoon. He went inside and laid down to rest and he died in his sleep.
My Gramma was making dinner when she walked into the bedroom and found her husband had left for heaven.
Raking those leaves had more meaning to my Gramma than just a chore for her grandson from Chicago…. It was a lesson in becoming a man.
I’d do anything to sit at that dinner table and eat Brussel sprouts with my Gramma!
6130 Indianola……..

Beatles “in my Life” was the first song of the morning…. Not a bad way to start off the day.

I’m getting tired of putting clouds up in the right hand corner and I’m not to happy that the sunset is well before the “wheel of fortune.”

Not sure why this quote grabbed my attention…. Maybe it’s a reminder that I shouldn’t feel sorry for myself. Someone is envious of my position in life.
It also says that caring for others and worrying about them shows character… strong character!

The Boston Wag Sox won last night… I’m sure the new guy in heaven had his share of victory beer!

It’s Thursday already so there is so much that we need to share,

So send a smile and show you care!

Humpday... in 1977 the Sox lost and the Cubs won on June 24th.

A friend came up to me at a get together yesterday and told me he looks forward to seeing my chalkboard everyday.... made me smile!
What started as a way to give the Shepkids familiarity between their mom’s house and my new home turned into therapy for me and has now become a daily springboard for my friends!
It’s the little things in life!

June is flying by quickly! Full moon this week, but a cloudy forecast might keep us from the shine of the strawberry moon!

It took me years to realize all the Mickey Mouse Bullshit in my daily life was created by insecure people and on the days I was creating Mickey Mouse Bullshit… I was being insecure!

So I learned to stay away from the drama! It’s either going to be a tragedy or a comedy!
So today we are going to have a comedy….. also a Chocolate éclair!

I’m just sitting here watching the world go round and round… though I slept through the tornado sirens last night!

Huge branch down across the street from my home when I walked to the Car.

2020

As I’ve gotten older I’ve learned that the sun and moon aren’t “just in the sky.” Everyday is different! Every shadow has a different length, every sunbeam a different angle.
Today at 4:43pm we celebrate the longest day of the year.
...Home is where I want to be....pick me up and turn me round!

Whenever things look horrible you need to rise up in the morning and have something you love give you incentive to sing off key or dance like Elaine Benes.

When we were forced to read Billy Shakes sonnets in school I didn’t realize some would be roadmaps on life’s path!
Especially Twenty Nine….

The moving waters of the river are running shallow during this balmy spring. I always thought Langston’s river was influenced by Bysshe’s desert.

Looking at both and what is happening in the world today…. The negro has finally uncovered Ozy!
The well read will not be offended!

Don’t get caught not doing what you wanted to get done this summer….

Hell…. Don’t get caught not doing what you need to get done before 2022!
Also…. Don’t get caught with your pants down unless you’re with someone else caught with their pants down!

Sometimes you have a day that knocks you down to remind you where you are on the Sun circler!

It is so much easier to draw a “W,” but you got to have that reminder that you can’t win them all!
Enjoy the Ides of June!

June 13th, 2021

The June mornings with their early entrance are full of amazement and glory.

I don’t know how many June’s I have left, but when I’m gone I hope the Shepley’s of the future will remember how I loved those early sunrises, the songs I listened to and the tales I told….

On another note…. Happy Birthday to Mrs. Grace. She gave me the gift of her family’s friendship… she has made the world a better place in her 80 years!
